Day
(4):
Today
We left Vienna and headed to Salzburg, We really liked their, At 6:00 AM we
woke up and packed our bags and had breakfast and checked out, for the hotel
they took 396.50 euro for the reservation and our net registration. We took the
train in U6 Underground and headed to the main train station, we already booked
our ticked by the Eurail Company since we were in Kuwait so we had no problems
just hop on the train you want without any pre-procedures I would really
recommend these tickets and it is not that expensive when you book at the
economy class.

The departure time was 8:20AM and the arrival
was 10:59 AM during that time we were watching the classical movie “ The Sound
of Music “ it really gave us a sense to the place, we couldn’t finish it though
because we were already there. There are no trains in Salzburg because it is a
small city and much quite than Vienna, we had a little time until we found our
right bus to reach the hotel it was two stops from the train and bus station
until we reached our hotel then we had to walk nearly 200 meter until we
reached the hotel, from the outside it looks like a small yellow house so we were afraid that the
room would be small but when we entered our room it was double the size of our
Vienna room with a LCD TV the bed was very wide so as the bathroom. So we had
some rest to continue with our day “ No time to waste”.

We took a brief look at some of the
sightseeing locations by the web “ the internet is much cheaper here 5 euro per
day but it is not that fast like Vienna but it really do the work “ and we
settled that we visit the famous Fortress of Salzburg as it closes at 7 PM. But
before that we were hungry so walked to the nearest restaurant. It was such a
small restaurant but the lady who worked there is really honest in her job,
blinded by our hunger we ordered much food that we decided if we couldn’t
finish it we will take it with us, the lady kindly suggested to us less food because
she knew our situation so we took her advice and surprisingly she was right!!
It was just the right portion for us. She was so kind she didn’t care if it
would bring her more money if we ordered more, and the food was heavenly
delicious a salmon fish fillet and a vegetable burger for 20.90 euro.

After
that we went back to the hotel and figured out that the keys to Salzburg are a
bicycle and Salzburg card. We rented a bike for 12 euro per person for 1 day and bought
the Salzburg card for 38 euro per card. This card literarily opens Salzburg for
you to the widest it guarantee you free entrance to most of Salzburg tourist
spot and sightseeing locations and free entrance to buses and all
transportation and discounts on most of restaurants so I strongly suggest you
buy it when you come. After everything is settled we decided the road we will
go through to reach the Fortress and began our biking journey.
| Figure(4): Our Bikes |
Biking is the
most wonderful experience you will ever have in your life everybody is biking
so you will feel comfortable and feel like you own the road LOL. In the way we
faced many interesting spots like the great river of Salzburg and some horse
shaped fountains and we entered a car-free zone where you really can own the
road and we took a tour around by ourselves until we found the entrance. The
fortress is way high above the ground and you can’t climb it to reach it so
they designed a system of trains to get you there without breaking a sweat,
just show them your Salzburg card and enter the train. It was really a fun
experience to witness and entered the fortress.
| Figure(5): The fortress |
To me it looked like an old
town with all its facilities “ churches, cafés, houses and shops “ but
unfortunately there was no tour guide what so ever so you had to explore the
place for yourself so I couldn’t sense the historical value of the place just
it was built in the 14th Century and it was really good. I would
recommend this tour because the view from up there, it was really magical I
felt like staying like that for hours everywhere you look you see a new view of
Salzburg and the mountains surrounding it, it was like Julie Andrews song “ The
Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music”. I really sang this song up there LOL.

We took a look around and bought ice cream from the café for 1.10 euro each and
then ended our tour and went back to the train to get down the mountains, it
was kinda raining when we reached down so we took our bicycles in a hurry and
wanted to head straight back to the hotel but we missed our was several times
until we were in the right track again. I would strongly recommend you keep a
GPS device near you always because you will really need it especially here
because all streets look the same a d it is so easy to get lost. At 7:30 PM we
finally arrived the hotel and were so tired and couldn’t move a finger as we
biked for 2 km going and returning so I jumped straight to bed and fell a
sleep.

It’s 1:35 AM I woke up to write this diary to
remember everything I went through this journey I am really enjoying my time
here thanks to the good plans my husband is putting everything is moving
smoothly and much easier than we thought. Tomorrow at 9:30 AM we have a tour
where a bus will pick us.. this tour is the reason why I wanted to go to
Austria in the first place, YEAH it’s the sound of music original tour where
you get to visit all the sites and locations used to shoot this classical
movie, so I should go back to sleep now.
That’s All for today, see you
tomorrow.
